Diamonds

a poem by Hema Rangaswamy

Dimpled smile of a baby
flash of lightning on the sky
dewdrops poised on a leaf
sunrays dancing on a stream.

All these bring back a memory
the fiery sparkle of diamonds
dangling on my mother’s ears
spreading rainbows as she moved.

When my mother smiled
her ears echoed her warmth
I felt as though her smile
was reflected by the diamonds.

So tiny and so brilliant
like stars plucked from above
sheathed deep in nature’s folds
shining on my mortal hands.
