The Chocolate Bar

a poem by Nandita Pai

A little girl maybe of six or seven,
Sat on a wooden bench.
In her chubby hands,
A huge creamy chocolate bar she clenched.
In her own thoughts she sat alone,
In that lonely park.
And was suddenly disturbed,
By the sound of a very near bark.
Alarmed by the noise,
The little girl looked up.
Sweetly staring back at her,
Was an adorable pup.
The pup was alternating gazes,
From girl to chocolate bar.
With such a twinkle in his eyes,
Like that of a star.
Behind her back,
The girl hid the chocolate quick,
But the sweet little puppy,
Her hand he began to lick.
Cautiously the girl gave it a small bite,
Happily the pup ate it in the twilight.
