Anything

a poem by Moses H Ezekiel

Give me meagre income
To be earned from the sweat of my toil,
Or give me amass wealth
Inherited by fortune,
Give me anything, O Lord!
But give me contentment
To be happy with whatever I have!

Give me a small cottage and a torn mattress
To retire after a hard day’s work,
Or give me a five-star apartment
With a king-size bed,
Give me anything, O Lord!
But give me sleep
To awake afresh the next morning.

Give me the role of a hero
On this stage of world drama,
Or give the role of a side actor
Or even a small character in a mob scene
Give me anything, O Lord!
But don’t give me the role of a villain
Cause I won’t play that role so well.

Give me anything, O Lord!
But give me the knowledge and understanding
To enjoy anything and everything
In the name of the Lord!
