This time, I am holding your hand

a poem by Satheesan Rangorath

You were with me holding my hand
Walking through the carnival crowd
I was guiding you through the hiss and hoot
Covering you from the dust and fumes
Sweat and stench
I was watching you all the way
Your eyes were wide with wonder
Your face shining against the shower of golden grains
Were you not talking all the time?
Questioning and expressing disbelief
You tasted and ate everything that came your way
Ice creams, Popcorn, Cotton candy, lollypops
Showing your rainbow coloured tongue
You made me express wonder at your fete
What a childlike and childish expressions
The little pleasures of child hood
Shaking your head to the drum beats
Enjoying the sweet melody from pipe
Decorated elephants lined up
In the glitter of umbrellas
You were sleepwalking in a dream
Dancing among crowd you merged into
Dissolving yourselves in to the fare
You were humming a hearty tune

Looking back stealthily
You were disappearing in the crowd
Leaving your song unfinished hanging in the air
Waiting for a joyride in the giant wheel
You got entangled in revolving time
Sharing life and death
Alarmed I and beckoned you
No. You were out of my reach
Fast avoiding me
And shouting, thrilled at the prospects

I know you will come back
I have been waiting for you aeons
Yes. Now you are here
Finishing the song you started
The song of life and death
This time I am holding you
Won’t let you go???
