No doubt

a poem by Vikash

“Look at me,
Look in to my eyes…”
She demanded.
I have prepared myself for this,
I practiced, I laboured.
It was now or never.

I had only one chance
To do this correctly.
No foul language!
No stupid stuttering.
No doubt.
Just one chance!

My eyes are calm,
My frown in place,
My sweaty palms are my only
Sign of reservation.
Don’t touch…
Don’t.

Her eyes began to distract me.
I could see the promises,
The plans, the love
Reservoired, glowing…
So enchanting,
So beautiful.

“I don’t love you!”
The words finally poured out.
My expression remained cold.
Cruel and untrue,
I repeated those devastating words.
“I don’t love you.”

She remained silent,
Not looking at me,
Not aware of my tear filled eyes.
I had to…
She deserves better than me…
I know that I am not good enough.

She turned away from me.
“I love you!” She cried
And ran off into the future,
Without me.
I did the right thing…
No doubt.

What did I do?
I remember it all so clearly,
I curse myself.
Filled with doubt,
I lay down the flowers
On her grave.
