What is love?

a poem by Maryse Saldanha

What is love?
The soft blowing breeze
The running waters
When my heart beats faster
Is it love?

The warm summer breeze hits my face
My thirst love cannot quench
‘Love can turn mountains to mole holes’ they say
Is love then but an empty expression?

When sweet nothings are whispered into my ear
When someone lends a helping hand
Is it love that brings us near?
Or is it love that takes us afar?

Is love what a man shares with woman?
Seldom between them there is love
Love for them is a mere understanding
To give of each other, but not love

Love is what a mother gives to her child
Energy spent, sleepless nights
She gives knowing not if it be returned
She gives coz’ there’s more love in her heart

I do not know what is better
Being in love or not being in love
In love there is expectation and hope
If no love, no expectations but there remains hope

People swear by love
People die for love
Some people become great thinkers on love
So what inspires me? Is it love?

No my love, it’s not love
It is only the summer heat that makes me write
