Vicious night…

a poem by Madhura Dabholkar

My eyes opened at midnight
I found myself in the woods
Shocked and scared I was
Not knowing where I stood.

Strained was the atmosphere
Various sounds could be heard
I started running on the path unaware
Frantic I ran,
Headed nowhere.

Not a flicker of light could be seen
And the darkness scared me more
Afraid, something would come and hurt me
And my body would be torn.

Tired and weak my body was
Of running for so long
The blood gushing inside me
Eyes searching for a soul.

Crawling and dragging my powerless bones
I headed in the horrific night
Rising fear made me numb
Just wished someone to hold me tight.

Far away I saw a shadow
Coming towards me
Afraid and anxious to know,
What it was
I screamed for it to help me.

Startled my eyes were
As I trembled with fear
Couldn’t figure what it was
I fainted with painful tears.

As I unshut my closed eyes
I find myself in my quilt
My room filled with morning beam
Only to realize,
The night was just a dream.
