We Belong

a poem by Viswanath Krishnan

On a Sunday morning,
sitting on a chair in the balcony,
stretching my legs,
looking out at the distant hills
and the trees and grass in front,
and a few men walking their dogs,
I feel the world exists for me
and I am the centre of the universe.

When I go down to the shopping mall
and see the endless streams of humanity,
I think I am but one in a crowd,
unimportant and a
miniscule part of the Infinity.

When I sit back and ponder,
I realize both visions are mental fantasies;
I am not only me but belong
to the trees, birds, humanity,
nay to everything animate and inanimate,
to the sky, stars and all cosmos
which gave me life and ability to reflect.
