Providence’s Craft

a poem by Mabel Annie Chacko

Once upon a time there ruled a King, and
A large perfectly cut diamond he owned.
Distressed was he when one day, somehow,
Its beauty was marred,
Its shine dimmed,
And its value almost lost,
By a small hairline scratch.
“Your Highness, it’s ruined”, declared his jewelers.
Announced the King thus:
“A Handsome reward to the man
Who restores the beauty of the diamond.”
And just when the night was the darkest,
And when hope was almost lost,
A poor craftsman
Called on the King and mad his promises thus:
“Sire, the same scratch will be,
Made into its most beautiful asset by me.”
The King entrusted the man, the stone,
And many a week passed before his return;
And lo! there was the stone alright,
More exquisite than ever before-
With a rose carved on it, whose
Stem once so dismayed the King.

Like the rose, the scratches in our life,
Can be beautiful opportunities God provides,
To turn a negative into the positive;
For when it comes down to choices,
Our own choices;
Providence provides opportunities
For us to craft our destiny.
