Blessings

a poem by Shobha

Do you appreciate the value of
the blessings of elders
as they come from deep with in
and so in abundance
evident from the smiling eyes
a pat on the back
a tenderness on the face
when you bend to
touch their feet
and smear the dust to brows
for-
with your show of reverence
you epitomise humility
and nothing melts the elders more
than an expression there of
as if stripped of all ego
asking for alms
stands a beggar
with an empty bowl.
