Children of lesser human being

a poem by Jayati Chowdhury

They were delivered in the dark
And they departed in the dark too
Although their first cry and smile were like others
Yet they are children of lesser human being.
They played like others but in a dark blind alley
Their eyes lit up too, to see balloons and candies
Like a seedling dispersed they grew up uncared for
Unseen in the urban slumped alley.
Sitting in the classroom chatting with their friends
‘Toys’ not the topic of conversation
‘Gambling for living’ dominate.
Wrecked fence and broken wagons
Their point of meeting everyday
Life is to snatch from others
As others snatched life from them.
Attired in tattered clothes hunger stricken figures
Convinced about the looming darkness,
Yet they visualize a better future
They wriggle in pain for what they had cherished
Their unfulfilled minds remind them mournfully
They are children of lesser human being
They know the meaning of father
But never had the warmth of one
Their mothers’ victim of social practice
And they are children of lesser human being.
The generosity of the high-born,
Visiting their dungeon by chance
Lecturing the way to live life
Empathy and encourage once in a while
But never fostered to mold their life
After all, they are children of lesser human being.
They lose themselves inevitably in their struggle to live
Their path leads them to dingy cell frequently
They splurge into dishonest traits
Squander humanity in an inhuman way-
As they are children of lesser human being
Born to die like every human being
They perish at times unidentified
And like useless unwanted stuff
They are disgracefully thrown aside
Whilst their life saga ends there
Appalling practice of human trade thrive well
But mothers still weep in the dark blind alley
For delivering or for departed children of lesser human being.
