Oh River!

a poem by Jayati Chowdhury

Adieu to the grand peaks
And to the array of fir, birch and teak,
You plunge down the cavern
With a grace and valor.

Crystal clear brush past the boulders
Caressing the shore and edge,
You embark on an enduring voyage
Fizzy current, ferry you down the way.

Plummeting and dancing in torrential shower
Winding and sliding, you move on.
You vow to herald avenues of livelihood,
You are the lifeline for myriad.

You pass by unknown villages and cities
And gather the chronicle of their pleasure and grief,
Impatient you! Move ahead hastily,
Zealous to see many, many more.

You arrive at the foot of sky-scraping towers,
But your sparkle splendor already tarnished-
Mud, muck and litter of the city
On your surface, float copiously.

Heaving and hauling, you cart onward
To meet the call of the marine.
Despite the conduct of mankind,
Your assurance is never-ending.
