Indian Independence Day Celebrations

a poem by Ramachandran Nair R

Independence to inter-dependence,
Nation moves at supersonic speed;
Dependent the citizens on the nation state,
In everything including fresh air and clean water;
As the nation grows stronger with weapons,
Negated are the spirit that won independence.

Irony of the nation and the hapless citizens,
Nostalgia for ritualistically elected leaders,
Devoid of humility towards their voters,
Encouraging power craze and factionalism,
Promoted by blood stained foreign money,
Encashed through terrorism of all kinds,
Naturalised through nationalistic pride,
Demonstrated through street shows,
Endangering lives of common man,
Natural and notional citizen of India,
Craving for justices of all kinds,
Enshrined in preamble of Indian Constitution.

Doves of peace the citizens long for,
As the nation celebrates Independence Day,
Year after year and decades after decades.

Corruption of all kinds must go,
Education should not be for money making,
Labour of love be the nation’;s pride,
Encourage use of human energy,
Build goodwill towards one and all,
Right in time when the same needed the most;
As the night stars twinkle and moon shine,
Tired men fast asleep on the ground start snoring,
In the hope to wake up early before the sun rise,
Over the oceans and mountains all over the world,
Not to break the nation into pieces but to make it strong,
So that all live in peace with good health and prosperity.
