Fear

a poem by Maryse Saldanha

In the distance my eyes meet an empty sky
It’s a cold and windy winter’s night
The street lamp sheds light on the narrow path
I look around for people there are none

The trees cast their shadows eerily
Like evil spirits out to catch their prey
Demons run around with their monstrous eyes
Dogs bark furiously but they keep distance safe

I walk alone thru the forlorn streets
In my heart I feel there is fear
I look all around suspiciously
For anyone who in the corner lurks

Can he sense my fear? They say they can
I’ve got to get thru as fast as I can
I hear footsteps behind, dare not look around
What may it be? I fearfully move on

I quicken my pace to almost a run
The footsteps follow me I begin to run
The cold wind hits my face but sweat trickles down
I lose direction and blindly run

What can I do how do I lose him?
The distance between us soon diminishing
Over a twig I trip and fall
My ankle hurts but I rise and move on

In the pitch darkness I fail to see
I step into a pit and fall down deep
There is no way out in panic I scream
There is none to help his wicked laughter rings
