The Canine Catcher

a poem by Vidhya Jayarama Raja

Stray dog sniffing at a dump
Yama himself with a noose
Stood still a little beyond
Canine snapped by the catcher
Bark whimpering into a whine
Fear freezing into submission
Doomed, dumped, docile
Midst the miserables within the mesh
Tethered, tongue hanging out
Gazing beyond the metal gauze
Searching for a saviour
Death drawing close
Dog van on the move.
