The Tube

a poem by Vikram Bhandari

Underground…
London – life in the fast lane.
Escalators –
Drug predators…
People run up and down.
Rush –
To the platform…
Stand back the train is approaching.
Doors slide…
Step inside…
But ‘Mind the Gap’!
Worried faces…
Lovers – embraces…
Metro, Evening Standard, a book in hand.
Addicts…punks,
Saints…professionals…
Traverse together – yet not ‘one’.
Train pulls…
Out of the tunnel…
Into Oxford Circus station.
Big Crowds…
People struggle…
To get in and out.
Hurry up!
Change trains…
Follow the arrow for the Victoria line.
Exit –
Way out…
Insert your ticket and step outside.
