My Best Friend

a poem by Rijoy Bhaumik

Often have I been asked
O quiet one,
Who is thy best friend
To this my reply
Has simply been
I will never pretend.
I will never say that thou is the one
Nor shall I resort to lies.
But listen and you may find out,
Why a friend bids no goodbyes.

“A friend in need
Is a friend indeed”
Is to tell a tall tale small.
But O my brother
You’ll never know
If you don’t know it all.

Your friend is like the light
In the tunnel oh, so dark,
He is the one who will respond
To each and every hark.
A friend is one
Whose shoulder will never be cold,
He is the one who leads with courage
He is the one who’s bold.
Your friend will always look up to you,
But never turn away
He is the one standing astride you
No matter what they say.
A friend will never spit on your face
He will never stab your back
He will smile no matter what
Even if these you lack
He is the one through thick and thin
The one through every tear
He is the one through happiness
He is one to cherish, my dear.
He is your own big mirror,
And he is your looking glass
He is there already for you,
No matter fail or pass.

My answer to your question now,
It is the truth I speak, I vow.
Debayan is the name you seek,
He is the one so mild, so meek.
The qualities above he does possess,
Straightens my life, that is a mess.
With this you see, I come to an end,
My mother is my best friend.
