The Moon

a poem by Sankhajit Bhattacharjee

The economic condition of a poet
dictates one’s mood, hence the theme.
The beauty of moon elevates
the romantic mood of a rich,
one compares her
with the beauty of a maiden
and falls in her love.
But she reminds the poor-
earning bread and butter is the highest idea,
hence shatters all her beauty
in front of the needy.

This poet was born in a lower middle class family,
he witnessed his parents’ life struggle
but was brought up in a golden spoon-
he may one day become rich,
may enjoy the fruits of others’ labors:
to him the beauty of moon becomes the symbol of duty.
