The Boy

a poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

Today he is a cowboy
tries to lasso dogs
which don’t appreciate this silly game,
it’s embarrassing
and shamefaced they run away,
don’t dare to bite a human child.
Turns his attention to cats
which seek refuge in trees and roofs.
Frustrated asks me to play
and I let him lasso me a few times,
till he tires, mounts his bike pedals down the lane
followed by red Indians only he can see.
