A Great Gem

a poem by Janakiraman Ra

On learning that his wife could save
He curtailed himself his own salary
Considering that it was in excess.

Though a minister for Police
He didn’t keep even a servant.
His way of life was so simple.

Though his family desired much
Air-conditioning of his residence
He returned back the equipments.

Perhaps, he was the only minister
Who was stopped at the entrance
By his own Police personnel.

Perhaps ,he was the only minister
Who didn’t jump at the police
When his identity was made known.

On tours he avoided big lodges
Stayed even in farmers’ houses.
He was the image of humility.

But his achievements were great.
Much praised Cairo Peace Plan and
Tashkent Agreement reminds him.

As Railway minister it is he
Who provided fans and amenities
And Reservation for Third class.

The poor were always in his mind.
He really lived like the poor
And devotedly worked for the poor.

He is LAL BAHADHUR SASTHRI
A true and great gem of a LEADER
Let showers of salutes adorn him.

Oh my pen, oh my dear pen
Don’t write about leaders in masks;
Praise only gems among leaders.

Please write again and again
So that such leaders may emerge
In this country again and again.
