The Sorceress Night

a poem by Uday Lalan

As the sun slowly disappears into the hungry sea
Like an abandoned slowly sinking ship
The enchanting sorceress night arrives in her bridal glory
With an ivory dot which sometimes is called the Moon

And this sorceress who can grant us neither eternal youth
Nor can give us a sword to slay a fire breathing dragon
Puts up such a dazzling display of jewels in the sky
That even immortality becomes insignificant for our eyes

Gently she wakes up all who rested during the day
Sings a lullaby to all who toiled during the day
Cools the seas, the hills, the fields and those deep caves
Which (believe me) are the ears of our dear earth

Like a watchful guardian she beholds with starry eyes,
Warns the straying cloud, helps poets create verse,
Fires in the lonely lovesick hearts a burning desire
And sends to sleepy eyes dreams on ivory beams

With mom’s ray, she whispers in the caves, “I will return soon”
And like a butterfly leaving the bud after a delightful sip,
Like lips pulling away from the beloved’s face after a passionate kiss
She pulls herself away from earth’s face to vanish into the sky!
