Smile

a poem by Maryse Saldanha

At the centre of the garden I sit
And watch the sun climb up into the sky
Its beautiful rays make me feel bright
Bright orange and yellow this ball of light

I am at my best today
Zestful youth and beauty today mine
Unlike others I may not live for long
But I live to the full what be mine

I watch the people out on their morning walks
Then the club that fills laughter in the air
At first they seem crazy, then they make me smile
I join in and flash my fragrant smile

Then come the children to play
Joyful shrieks now fill the naughty air
I wish I could join I know I cannot
I watch them roll on the grass all worry at bay

I feel someone’s eyes on me
Curiously I look all around
My admirer walks right up to me
“hello sunflower!” my best smile I flash

His fingers gently caress my face
Curious onlookers watch us serenade
He says, “You are beautiful!” it makes me blush
The sun winks at me and joins in the fun

He carries me away in his arms
Brings out the best for me to lay on
I know this won’t last, soon I’ll be gone
Through the window I watch the setting sun
From an antique vase peeps a beautiful sunflower
