Perfect Gift

a poem by Gopal Krishan

I would have seen you as a goddess of spring,
wearing your jewels of flowers,
spreading sweet fragrance around yourself
and making flowers bloom with your smile…
if I could have gifted you a Valley of flowers.

I would have seen you as a small angel,
with starry dreaminess in your eyes,
stars all entangled in your hair
and sitting atop your magic wand…
if I could have gifted you the stars of heaven.

I would have seen you as an eternal desire,
wearing white, smooth, silky robe
woven of the moonlight itself
illuminated by the light of love…
if I could have gifted you the moon itself.

I would have seen you as a free bird,
soaring uninhibited amongst the clouds
playing with the colours of human emotions
spreading the music of love and harmony…
if I could have gifted you the wings of fantasy.

I would have seen you as a small child,
playing in the protective embrace of my arms,
rediscovering your childhood
as I shield you from all the pains and sorrows…
if I could have gifted you all the joys of this world.

As beautiful you are now,
you would be then too
had I been
able to gift you any of these,
but I know I can’t
All I can gift you today
are a few nonsense loving words,
lots of caring thoughts
and all my love
In short all I can gift you today
Is ME…
