Banana Sandwich

a poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

Woke up, pre dawn and a voice sang in my mind:
‘And then you’ll not know that you ever lived’
As fear surged through me
like an electric current I said
‘And never know that Portugal lost 3-2 against USA?’
twisting my lips into an imitation of a smile.
Trivialities that’s the game of football,
yet millions of people find it more important
than the fact that two far eastern nuclear-armed countries
are threatening to obliterate each other.
Religious leaders,
rabble rousing politicians
and stupid generals are egoistically gambling with millions of life,
while mindless football graces
the front page of even serious newspapers.
The acceptance of the inevitable calmed me,
life is more important than death.
Got up went into the kitchen
and peeled myself a banana.
