Night Pranks

a poem by Sudarshan Madhav Karhale

At times when nights are sleepless,
I stare at something unknown,
hidden in the prevailing darkness;
while my body lie dead
on the bed,
my soul keeps struggling all the time.

Many a thoughts run through the corners of my mind,
which I always try to leave behind;
I see dreadful shadows in my dreams,
wake up at a sudden
listening to their screams.

And what I found
that nothing is real,
I sigh relieved of
every pain and fear;
I get up to have myself
a glass of water,
wishing for no more nightmares ever.

Again I bump
my head on the pillow,
letting unconsciousness slowly to follow;
Falling asleep,
I cuddle side by side
with my younger brother,
murmuring right next to me on the other side.
