They danced a summer night

a poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

They Danced a Summer Night (I’m told)

Narrate me a fable
for I’m sad these autumnal days
and need to hear something
really delightful indeed.

Enlighten me again
about the blue Caribbean Sea
when it is a magic carpet
where sunset and sunrise
pay tribute to its gentle power
by strewing gold coins on it surface.

Tell me, about its craggy and lusciously green islands
where they play music
that makes my old feet restless
and ready to dance.
And retell about smiles in black faces
that make my heart sing.

Don’t gainsay me now,
I told you to tell me a story
and not truths about greed, poverty and brutality.
Just give me a tale
with a happy ending
where the prince loves his princess
and doesn’t screw around
when she has gone to the gym
to keep her body trim,
for him.

I need to hear something really uplifting today
before I can get my sagging bum
off the comfy chair to do the mundane,
like washing the dishes
and taking the dog for a walk.
