Drawing from you

a poem by Elaine E. Howie

Just a baby in your wound I felt your heart
I drank and ate your food right from the start
I was but a young thing but I already knew
That to stay alive I must draw from you

When the first slap came
Before I even had a name
I turned instinctly to your breast
For my food and my rest

When I got home and started to cry
I heard you singing me my first lullaby
I knew then that all I could do
Was continue to draw from you

My first steps were an amazing feat you said
And held me tight as you touched my head
I looked into your eyes
And as they say babies are wise
I knew it was all – true,
I was still drawing from you

Now I am grown up with children of my own
I try to remember all of those old songs
I try to spread to them all the best
That is because you have gone on to rest
But I do know what I must do
So I pool my memory and draw from you

You took me through all of the stages to win
You were always there as my friend
And I will draw from you until breath is no longer in me
The End
