Apprehensively Falling in Love

a poem by Tanushree Nair

The caged bird
I called my heart
Has flown away; far away
So far away
But left a dream so dazzling in its vividity
Like a bright feather in its empty cage;
Perhaps just to remind me that once upon a time
That heart was really mine.

My thoughts tonight
Are infinite:
Just like the vast and empty space: there beyond the Earth
Lightened by millions of stars.
And enchanted though
This, I must know
That light is light because there is
Only one thing more: the black of endless darkness.

I reflect at
Reflections that
Your face serene casts in the lake.
But apprehensions, like pebbles
Ripple the water: your face vanishes, my reveries drown
From dreams now I awake.

A perfumed breeze
Blows through the broken pane of
The window of my heart.
But wherefrom do these sweet winds blow?
But then, in love
I realise
Mirages become aromatic.
