A Little Death

a poem by Devika

Why must every rainbow lie
On the road, when monsoon sky
Growls at the earth in throaty whispers-
Why do angels in my heart
Tell me when it’s time to part
From everything that truly matters-
Why must eyes just linger on,
On beloved seen and gone
Like a heartbeat in my memory-
Why do tears edge my breath
In an all-pervasive death
Every time I say goodbye-

Tell me, Love, the answers all
Before twilight, before nightfall-

Where does all the starlight go
When it sleeps in dawn’s glow
Like my night’s dream undreamt-
Where does sunshine fold its rays
At the restful ends of days
Like my daily prayers unspent-
When the silence drops on me
Where will all my heartbeats be
In my Love or in my grave-
When my Love too comes Home
Will he find in me a room;
In my love there’s ample space-

Tell me, Love, the answers all
Before twilight, before nightfall…
