A Sister

a poem by Elaine E. Howie

A sister kneels and prays
When she don’t know what else to say
A sister cries out loud
For the mishaps of a sister’s child

A sister stands up firm
A sister watches and waits for her turn
A sister loves unconditionally
A sister knows a sister’s love will never flee

A sister is you
A sister is me
A sister is not new
A sister lets a sister be free

A sister sits and thinks of her life
And knows a sisters struggles and strifes
A sister is always there
A sister keeps a sister alert and aware

A sister is definitely always in need
But she will always be ready to do a good deed
A sister is someone who waits for you
Yes she is concerned about all that you do

A sister embraces life and gets a great thrill
And will not stunt or stop your strong will
A sister never makes demands
And refuses against you to take a stand

She is the one who knows
That she and you have all sorts of holes
Your faults are always real small
Because just like others hers are so tall

A sister is far too smart
To ask a sister to give up what is in her heart
A sister has already been there
And will warn her sister to beware

Yes a sister is very special to me
Because she is a part of me that I can see
A person that I can feel
A person that knows all my ordeals

She comes to me in times of need
We talk and share and my mind she feeds
She raises me up to greater lengths
And shares with me sound reasoning and common sense

I am glad to have a sister just like you
And I am glad that you love me as a sister too
I share this with all of my sisters not just a few
But for you my big sister this is nothing new

Always loving you all never wanting to see not one of you fall
For you all are good sister in my eye
And you will always be my sister until I stop breathing and die

When life has given up on a friend
We will still be just sisters until
The end.

This is dedicated to all my sisters
But written to my big sister Dorothy Tilghman.
