A visit to Nagalapuram Temple

a poem by Rao A J

I sit cross-legged in the temple courtyard
The clarinet blows and the cymbals beat
To the soul-uplifting rhythm of a Tyagaraya krithi

The images of another world in time
Larger than life
Of Srikrishnadevaraya and his mother
Flit before me like giant spectres from a misty alien land

The resplendent smile of the Lord
Seems to bridge the vast distances in time
For He alone can connect us through the ether of time
Through five hundred years of hazy history

These silent stone arches have stood motionless through time
Immortalising an ephemeral mother-son relationship
A symbiotic linkage that transcended the barriers of time and space

The magical man-mother-God continuum
Flows through my willing heart
And flows on.
