Dream and Reality

a poem by Priyanka Sacha Majumdar

Dream away, sweet little one,
Dream away, till daylight dawns upon you,
Till you have to face the harsh rays of the sun
And forego the calm moonlight.
Dream away, while the stars shine down
Upon your innocent angelic face.
Don’t open your eyes now,
It’s too soon for you to face daylight,
Enjoy the peaceful night while it lasts
Because once moonlight dawns
You will have to face bitter reality,
And that’s when you’ll realise,
That dreams are simply what they are;
They have no base, no foundation,
Nothing to rest upon.
They are simply vague and impractical
Creations of the mind.
As daylight dawns
You’ll see what life is really all about.
The strong rays of the sun will probably blind you in the beginning
But then, don’t worry,
You’ll soon get used to it.
Later, at leisure hours,
When you’ll think about
Those dreams, which were
Once free of cost,
You’ll realise that they are
In reality, priceless.
Nothing you say or do
Will make them reality.
So then you’ll choose to compromise instead,
And think about possibilities,
Because possibilities can be accomplished.
You’ll know there’s no use in dreaming
As dreams are like wisps of dust,-
You think you have them within the palm of your hand
But then, they’re not really there.
So dream away sweet little one,
Dream away while you can.
