Refugees

a poem by Vidhya Jayarama Raja

No country to call their own
Caught in the crossfire
Of petty political passions
Bundling together bare essentials
Everything that meant home,
Left behind
Before the bullets
They fled.
Like flies around camps swarmed
Fights flaring
Merely to survive
Diseases rising rising
Bare skins shielding bare bones within
Vacant eyes starring beyond
The barbed wire
Where the heavens had halted
Herded together in a hell
Unknown and unwanted
Lived humans of a cursed kind.
