At Times I Think

a poem by Subhendu

At times I think
With a wordless wink
Why do I sink
At youth’s brink

And what in you
Makes you look new
Every time I spy
You corner-eye

And why your eyes
Make folly wise
And grasp my gaze
For an instant’s phase

What in your gait
Makes me be late
Every time I wait
Beside your gate

What makes me yearn
And my heart to burn
For a look of grace
From that loveless face

And why in sleep
In dreams so deep
I see you peep
At my sleepless heap

What do I gain
To suffer such pain
And suffer in vain
To have love rain

At times I think
With a wordless wink
Why do I sink
At youth’s brink?
