My Little Baby

a poem by Shweta

I was waiting for him to come home,
everything in readiness.
Why was he late today, I worried.
Ah! there he is,
my little baby.

I ran after him in the whole house,
the plate in my hands.
Take a bit of food, I implore,
but how can he,
when he has so much to tell;
about his friends,
and his teachers;
the pranks he played,
the punishments he escaped.
And I coax again,
do eat a bit,
my little baby.

How tired you must be
after the whole day.
Come, I’ll sing you a lullaby.
And you can sleep in your mother’s arms.
Oh! how angelic you look in your sleep,
my little baby.

And I too fall asleep,
for,
his closeness is as much a cosy nest to me,
as is mine to him.
Oh! you are a wonder,
my little baby.

Mama, mama, get up,
and play with me.
And I woke up with a start.
But where are you?
I can’t see you,
my little baby.

I have lost you my little angel,
but you’ll always be with me.
In my dreams,
in my thoughts.
How can I ever let you go,
my little baby.
