The Stag

a poem by Susan Abraham

The stag reigns supreme with its tawny hide
And graceful dreamy eyes.
The deer’s eyes have an artistic vision
Inspiring innumerable poets.
Yet it cannot change its beastly form
And branched antlers.
The stag is too mundane and it cannot rise
To the celestial heights.
Its eyes cannot become one among
The myriads of twinkling stars in the galaxy.
They say there is a deer in the moon.
But it is only a shadow, a mere apparition.
The stag with its down-to-earth body
Grazes in yonder grasslands
Unappreciated and unknown.
