Day and Night

a poem by Sankhajit Bhattacharjee

I
She is born with sunrise,
while sunset brings her demise.
She is born with delight, birds’ voice and twinkling dew drops;
she grows with school bell, office works and traffic jam;
when the sun is at the middle,
her busy life gets leisure to think for a while;
when the sun is about to droop,
her thinking is lost in midst of smoke and dust;
she dies with fatigue, turmoil and end of a labor’s days’ work.

II
She reigns when the sun is not there,
still the light of moon and stars brighten her glamour.
She is born with drowsiness;
as she grows, silence deepens;
her death is marked by the end of silence-
the arise of life from slumber.

III
Tension and tranquility can never live together,
so are day and night…
I wake up with tension-
many duties I have to perform,
as the load becomes lessened with the approach of night
I go for rest with a smile.
I prefer restful night, not restless day…
Rest inspires me to create poems-
as the silence of surroundings deepens,
my inner self breaks its silence.
