Close your eyes and see the light beyond

a poem by Mary Mathew

At times, when one is in need of peace,
The wisdom of ages says close your eyes
And let yourself into a world that is your own.
Slowly one is swung to the setting of a scene
Where your soul is given to Christ for keepsake.

There you will be touched by someone’s heart
And someone who wishes to touch yours.
In the kindness, one share the sweetest fruit
Of dreams that come true in pure tenderness.
Each cup of love is filled into one’s lips
And stays there until a sweet song is set free
From the lips in devotion, in praise of Thee.

There you will take the hand of one who is old
And provide sight to those who are blind.
Somewhere someone maybe longing for care
And you will find a quality you thought was rare
In you, that endows that someone with joy.
Thus you will be blessed in the hand of friendship.

Somewhere along the way you will realise that
There will always be someone whose love ceases not
At the time of hardship, which will remain there
To clear the loneliness even when you feel alone.
One will learn to appreciate the sunshine when
Storms seems unending in life, and a discovery is
Made of the goodness of others and a belief in peace
Is thus formed in the mind on the world out there.

When you have opened your eyes to the world before you
There you will have found the tranquility which you
Thought never existed, the conflicts in life brings in
Strength to walk through each fire with a mind so serene.
The heart will wish to give and receive a smile, a kind word
A reassuring hug as gifts to and from everyone around.

A time will come when you will place immeasurable value
On each day you spent admiring the beauty and love
In the world, viewing each part in life as worthwhile.
All of this is because you made the choice to contemplate
With closed eyes and see the light beyond your mortal sight.
