Empire State Building

a poem by Jayati

Like
Single mother;
Her children
Empire State Building.
Soar high feet firm;
Towering
beauty humble form.
My brother in law very kind
Took me sightseeing
to her height
Queue for tickets; for elevator wait;
similar security check of airport gate.
To the top on our way,
for keepsake, a short photo break.
Pay fifteen dollars, collect the same, before exiting.
Reach balcony, elemental feel, azure sky bright visible.
In fifty years
it wasn’t such a day; they said.
Tower top, many greedy eyes, travel unravel;
with personal device; camera, binoculars…
Gold washed sunshine touching blue.
On ground level
Serpentine asphalt flow boldly through;
Uneven skyscrapers. Shelters; that very tall grew.
Concrete-wonder trap green pursue…
Imprisoned trees. Central Park peep in between.
Eyes rove once again to the surrounding
Atlantic blue draped; Manhattan.
