House Guests

a poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

The uninvited came
broke down the door of my father’s house
smashed the furniture
and, yes it must be said,
killed the cat that had been drinking the cream,
but it was our own mog.
The unwanted offered to repair the door
and give us new artless furniture
providing that they could sleep in the living room,
drink the cream and choose which TV channel to watch.
