Wild Hope

a poem by Anup S Mudugal

As a tree grows,
I grew from seed to plant, nurtured and cared
By parents through the seasons.
Time and again seasons changed, but I didn’t.
I grew without ever shedding leaves, flowering
Throughout the years, hoping, it might be
A beauty for onlookers.
Neither did a bird build its nest, nor anyone
Did pluck my flowers.
One fine day many years later, I realised
That I was of no use to anyone,
My flowers never did enter a temple.
So I shed all my leaves and flowers, and dried up
Hoping at least my hollow trunk and branches
To serve someone during the coming winter.
