When I Saw the Skull Lying on the Sands One Summer Day

a poem by Bijay Kant Dubey

When I saw the skull on the rivulet bed,
I got unnerved
While crossing the country landscape
Alone
One hot summer day
When the loo was blowing
To reach the hamlet home.

The skull,
Human skull, when saw I lying
Toothless, eyeless on the sands
It seemed to be grinning, so grotesque and bizarre
I trying to avert my gaze
To speed along as fast as I can to be away from
But could not.

Away from human haunt, men and animals
When it was hot and perspiring, I remember
The parched earth was burning during the summertime,
I by chance came across the skull lying on the sands
And on seeing it I got unnerved as for what to do
To return back to or to move on
That lonely summer day.
