The Butterfly

a poem by Maryse Saldanha

I was born today I came out of my shell
The beautiful world I am out to see
They say there are many people out there
With other beings all live together in harmony

I spread out my wings and take to the skies
I see the sun joshing in the bright blue skies
The sun winks at me I smile in return
Such a beautiful day, high above I roam

I sight some forest and swoop to them down
I see different animals some playing around
I walk up to one ‘I am a lion’ says he
‘Someday when I grow, a King I shall I be’

I take to the air when I spot a bee
He’s busy collecting in his hive sweet honey
He makes some noise then soon gets busy
I fly away from the sounds, it makes me dizzy

I spot a structure and enter in there
People bow in prayer to the almighty maker
Peace and calm, comfort to all who come here
Varying faces and purpose but one redeemer

I hear someone sobbing with much pain in that voice
I cover the distance an old woman to find
She cries alone there is none to comfort her
They have all left and gone, their own paths to find

I take to the skies as fast as I can
I have covered great distance and many a land
There is sorrow and grief, also laughter and joy
There is hope in each heart and love if you find

I am what I am, a beautiful creature
Like all other beings I seek satisfaction divine
Sometimes its there, sometimes its not
But surrender not I move on sublime
