Hail Independence Day

a poem by Subhajit Sarkar

Bloodshed and revolution all around
Our brothers and sisters lay on the battle ground
Consolation that we have own
Snatched back the ’FREEDOM’ that was once gone
1947, 14th night, free from shackles of slavery,
We uprooted the British crown with our bravery
The dawn of 15th was high with expectations
An occasions of joy and mixed emotions.
The ‘Golden Eagle’ will again spread its wings
Flying high, defying challenges unforeseen.
So many decades have passed by
The eagle is still unable to fly.
Bound by shackles of corruptions and lawlessness
The freedom has become worse than that of British days.
Just singing our anthem and saluting the Flag
Is this the freedom so costly had?
A holiday is what we look for this day
Our patriotic fervour has long swept away.
Selfish interests and personal goals
Selling our integrity has become our role
Economic encroachment all around
India’s purse strings lay on foreign ground.
Still there seems no lurking fear
Of losing our independence which was so dear
Rise my fellow citizens on this day
To salute our martyrs and remember what they say
Protest against rapid liberalization that might one day
Convert the independence to a dependence day.
Many will disagree to what I say
But I hope they will contribute on their way
To enable the deprived celebrate a happier independence day
All of us would love our motherland
Have a strong foothold even in the sand
Watching others being swept away
Standing like a rock that has come to stay.
Suggestions are not what is the need
Actions and hard work must supercede
So lets take an oath in this very day
To strive hard towards country’s betterment
Keeping vested interests at bay,
This is my sincere thought for our independence day.
