Ode to a Senior Counsel

a poem by Ramachandran Nair R

Watch him, as he argued a case,
Before a sleeping judge,
Surrounded by joyful counsels,
Assembled to hear a senior colleague
Amusing one and all around with gimmicks.

Wearing a long dark gown,
On a dwarf look body,
Fitted inside a tight pant and shirt,
With a clean shaven face,
And neatly trimmed moustache
Waving a smiling look outside the court,
While winking a very cursory look at others inside the court room.

Senior Counsel’s dramatic skill in arguments,
Made all present in court to burst in laughter,
Waking up the judge from his deep sleep,
To give a favourable order to the Senior Counsel,
And walk fast towards his chambers
Closing the business of the court for the day.

Braver the Counsel looked now,
After winning the case so wonderfully.
What matters it if he has a long gown,
Disproportionate to his height and weight,
As long as he can keep the clients in good humour!
