Need you!

a poem by Uma

Twelve years have passed!
And still I need you, Mum, very badly…
Maybe for purely selfish reasons,
But still…
Just plain simple words from you,
“Everything will be alright!”
Made the whole lot of difference…
Why, Mum, why?
I am confused…

“So thin you have become!”
playing with the bangle on your wrist, I said.
“Is she not well?” chirped in your grandson
“Wait, I will grow up to be a doctor and make her well!”
“Oh, look, I have to live all those years” you said,
With such a pleased and contented look on your proud face.
Then why the very next day?
Why Mom, Why?
I am bewildered…

She is still breathing…
“No” was the firm reply!
Just brutal denial…
It was a dream,
Out of which you would wake up and I would tell you
Who said what and who cried the most… and how people loved you
Your son-in-law and brother-in-law
Sobbing profusely and
Yet your own daughter just dreaming without tears
People say such dreams enhance the life in reality…
Then why, Mama, why?
I fail to understand…

They carried you to the place…
One moment, you were there…
Then a red, bright light…
And then nothing.simply nothing…
Just dry words of instruction…
“Collect the ashes tomorrow”.that’s all!
How come.Mama, how come?
It’s beyond my understanding…

A life gone… other lives progressed
As a matter of routine, of course.
Years flew by… the positions changed
But still the need remains…
As poignant as ever…
I want your help, Mum
To overcome these puzzles of life
… need you!
