Y2K

a poem by Urmila Mahajan

I heard some voices the other day,
And looked curiously this way and that-
A few computers with a lot to say
Were having an informal chat!

Is this what the world is coming to?
It was hard to believe what I saw!
Is this called progress, I ask you?
It breaks every natural law!

A new millennium has come our way
Being with it is quite the trend-
Is it a fresh beginning, the Y2K?
Or just the beginning of the end?

Letter boxes are becoming antique,
E-mail is in, don’t you know?
E-cards and e-books for the PC freak
‘E’ everything and much more!

Run all your errands within the house,
Do your banking and shopping online!
Accomplish your tasks with the flick of a mouse
Does that really suit you fine?

Go to work and talk to a screen,
It’s a MONITOR, pardon me!
The CPU can brainwash you clean
And reset your thoughts totally!

This maddening mechanical hurry,
Gives your mind a mega doubt,
Give voice to your unspoken worry,
And let your heart speak out.

What you miss the most is a human touch,
Don’t let machines rule the day!
Don’t upset the balance of nature too much,
Be careful in the Y2K!
