The Terror

a poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

A boy alone on the beach
staring intensely beyond the sea.
One day he would be the master of his own ship
and sail to exotic place he had read about in books.
A voice awoke him of his trance!
Are you alone, my boy?
A man, whose sugary smile he didn’t like approached,
holding out his arms as to grab him.
He fled into a long, dark mountain tunnel,
through empty streets that had no light
where every door was shut.
He ran and ran
yet steps came closer
till he could run no more,
sank on his knees and cowed.
“What are you doing here sweet boy?
Come home with me.”
