The Rat Catcher

a poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

My hands are still trembling
a big rat came through the kitchen window
ran across the floor
and disappeared under the sink.
I too ran, into the living room
and closed the door.
What is that awful thing doing here in my house
getting bigger every minute
soon it will be the size of a bear
breaking down the door
eating me alive;
got to do something quickly!
Kill it?
“It’s one of God’s creature
and have the same right to life as you,”
an annoying voice told me.
“Yes, OK,
but can’t it go somewhere else
I fear snakes more than rats
but they never come here and bother me.”
Opened the door ajar
the neighbour’s cat crossed the floor heading for the sink,
rustling of plastic shopping bags, I keep under there,
a squeal and the cat came out with a tiny mouse in its mouth.
