Never make fun of a Frog

a poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

Cycling along the rough pebbled bed
Of a meandering, dry river on my
Mountain bike, I was hit by a dervish
Of a dust storm.

Fell off my bike and a frog came up
From under a stone;” I’m a frog,
It said (Like I didn’t know) ” And I’m
Waiting for a wall of water.

‘Why?” ‘Well, it looked at me
Like I should be stupid, or something.
“I can’t start my mating season
Without water! Can I?”

I got up dusted myself down and
Remounted. “Ugly frog you haven’t
Got a chance, the river is bone dry”
And was hit by a wall of water.

By the river’s left bank a princess sat
She had flowers in her hair and
Was kissing a frog as I floated by
On my way back to the ocean.
